I'll use them for that purpose on a regular basis. You can play the "pin drop" game where you just randomly seek anywhere in the tune and try to catch up and play along as quickly as possible. I will point out there's one major advantage to the play-along recordings like the Aebersolds. I'll use these tools to verify some aspect of what I'm trying to play but in regular practice I'm not working with them. In some cases, even the 'nome is a crutch and doesn't create real time. Use if it you only have to but I wouldn't reach for it as the first thing in your practicing bag.Īgain, it's my experience that I started maturing musically much faster the moment I dumped it because I was forced to develop my own sense of solid time and harmony sans crutches. If it were just one or two, it'd prob be ok but I think their overuse will have likely more of negative effect. Good players need no assistance and in a real playing situation, everybody needs to carry their own weight - rhythmically and harmonically.Įach of those three have possible negative reinforcement side-effects. Not me, I dropped the thing like a bad habit when I realized that I can't keep it up by myself. As many teachers espouse, anyone should be able to walk up at any point in the tune and be able to determine what you're song playing. If you dont' believe me, record yourself playing without any assistance (no nome, no nothing) and see how consistent you can keep it up while soloing and outlining all the changes. It's similar to how some people (including myself at times) whose time falls apart when they're forced to keep time by themselves. Sometimes that's a good thing but if I can't conceive the harmony on my own and have to rely on an external source, then it's not helping me grow to that extent. No matter what I do, it provides correct harmony. It not only generates time and a pulse, but also harmony. Again, possible negative reinforcement.ģ) Generated comping is a step deeper into the rabbit hole is step deeper than using just a metronome. The software currently cannot honor the song. Play it with a real person and it's an entirely different experience. It plays the same way whether I'm playing Blue Monk or Straight No Chaser or Bolivar Blues. It just plods along in the manner it's been programmed. The generated comping will not accent important points in the melody. After all, if you hang out with enough Southerners long enough, you'll probably pick up a their vocabulary and twang too.Ģ) Computers (at this state of the technology) do not respond to the actual melody that I'm playing. Not only that but I think it's possible to argue that the way it comps just might rub off on you (in a bad way). They will feed me things that will help me develop my solos. Real compers will play the call-and-response game with me. They will also help me develop the climax of my solo that I'm trying to achieve. A real comper will listen to what I'm playing and respond accordingly. Good compers will create points and contrasts to my solo that highlights what I'm trying to get across. Regardless, this is unrealistic when playing with a skilled live being. I've used iReal Pro recently and it's stil buggy - plays weird sounding chords sometimes. It plays according to a set of static changes with very minor alterations (if any). Why do it when the 'puter does it for you?ġ) Computer generated comping does not propel my solos forward. This results in several problems:ġ) Too much generated comping = boring solos.Ģ) Too much generated comping = nebulous chord changes that aren't directly related to the tune.ģ) Too much generated comping = weak time feel, weak ability to hear harmony while learning/playing tunes. It does not respond to the notes I play, nor does it respond or create forward motion that reflects the song I'm playing. From what I see now the biggest problem is this: I'l reiterate Ed's post in the list I provided. I'll also refer you to DEADPUKESPRAY's response in this thread about the merits of play-along software.Īnd to add, it's been a couple years since I've dropped the play-along stuff. If you want to find detailed discussions on the matter, look it up yourself. Zojo: I won't bother with the merits of memorizing tunes and working with the 'nome. ![]() ![]() CD: I'm ignoring your post because you fail at reading comprehension.
